Day Of Cyber Teacher Spotlight

Teaching Professor, UC Berkeley

The Day of Cyber team sat down with Dan Garcia, Teaching Professor at UC Berkeley, to get his thoughts about the role computer science plays in cyber security and how the Day of Cyber opens up the for communities that would never have the opportunity.

Day of Cyber: Tell us why you think Cyber education is so important to the nation?
Professor Garcia: Cyber education is at a critical juncture. There are so many unfilled slots in both government and private industry, and few students who understand the career opportunities in cybersecurity.

Day of Cyber: What role are you currently playing to help students connect to those opportunities?
Professor Garcia: I am really proud to be part of the CS Principals Initiative. AP Computer Science Principles introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. With a unique focus on creative problem solving and real-world applications, AP Computer Science Principles prepares students for college and career. One of the sub topics is cybersecurity. We are trying to get this course into every high school in the country. Creating the Cyber Generation starts with teachers, the most influential element in shaping and guiding a student’s educational path and one of the other programs I am involved with is called the Beauty & Joy of Computing, which is a summer development opportunity for teachers.

Day of Cyber: How does the Day of Cyber support your goals with connecting more students to the opportunities in technology?
Professor Garcia: The Day of Cyber is a powerful opportunity to give a student an authentic look of a diverse set of people really doing the job, and enables students to live a day in the life of real cyber professionals. This platform supports teachers by providing a rich piece of content they can share with students that is engaging so they can now teach cybersecurity more effectively.
